Ponders SG I dunno if anyone have discussed about this, but i have not seen anyone writing... I am wondering why Election issues in Singapore is regarding HDB, lifts stopping in everyfloor, you don't get upgrade if you don't vote. Why isn't it about more complex issue like... a streamlined Tax structure, a more liberal duty and excise. a welfare and social benefits (not a very big topic) on how Singapore can better foriegn ties. Singapore's foreign investment policies. how singapore can attract investors. It just makes it seem that Singaporeans only care about the ceiling that is over them and not care anything else about what singaproe does. You may have an upgraded HDB, but you end up paying high GST and personal tax or less social benefits because funds are directed to upgrade our house. What say you all?
LinYu SG "ren ming" - citizen, peasants so their concern will definetely stomach and roof and cost of living issue . "streamline tax", "liberal duty and excise", foreign ties? if the vast majority of the citizen is able to understand all this chim words, then we will be having alot of Foreign Ministers, Finance Ministers , Look, we can't even find one today
dracky SG The GE is about micro issues partly because the PAP offers (i) upgrading carrots and (ii) questions the ability of opposition to run town councils. If MPs are to run town councils, then some candidates will campaign on municipal issues eg. clogged drains in the estate, sheltered walkway, conservancy charges. To have candidates focus on national issues, we should have separate municipal elections like in many other countries. The town councils are elected separately from the MPs. Then the candidates cannot hide behind municipal issues, or upgrading carrots. Look at Seetoh Yee Pin. Other than upgrading, what national issue has he raised for the people of PP? Will he be a good MP?
Ito_^ SG hor nor. everyone like so bo chup like dat, sometimes dunnoe who to blame. people or gahmen.
LazerLordz SG the critical mass for most of the population to discuss more complex issues is not enough yet. those who can discuss them, don't have enough volume to effect meaningful impact. i'm equally disappointed no one raised the issue of Singapore-Malaysia relations, nor the possibility of oil price increases and whether there will be greater tax breaks for CNG cars, and whether migrants to Singapore should undergo a transparent points pool to determine if they deserve to get PR.
TooFree SG Although I do encourage fellow Singaporeans to be more political awared, however, for the whole of population to induce in politics at national level is pretty dangerous I afraid. A double edged sword here. It can either unite us OR divide us. In such a case scenerio it is better to enforce a boundary of laws to ensure responsible speeches make by anyone ie lesses freedom of speech in compensation for more socialty order. Vice versa.
LazerLordz SG Put it this way, for the majority of the population to be able to discuss such complex issues, we'd have a nation of academics. And have you ever seen your professor rant? Mine hardly does.He might even doze off...
miongisback SG Why micro? Most Singaporeans are not sophistiscated enough to handle any advance politiking. Why change the formula when simple, simple little things works. Like Progress Package, CPF top up, upgrading, "more good years slogan" ......... Our economy maybe first world, but unfortunately many people's mentality aren't yet. So PAP treats us as such people. We have a long, long way to go if we want to catch up with first world people in other countries. But we must not give up on Singaporeans. We can help undo the years of political indoctrination and brain conditioning by our cunning Government, and their medias.
